Munich, Germany-based KraussMaffei Group is working with the new MERGE Lightweight Technology Center at Germany's Chemnitz University of Technology — where experts are linking together manufacturing processes that were previously disconnected — like textiles, plastics and metals.
KM has provided an MXM 2500 injection moulding machine, which the MERGE centre will use for research for the automotive industry. The goal: produce vehicle parts with a lightweight design, in serial production that uses less energy in the manufacturing.
KM officials said the press can produce full-size parts, important for industry clients who can test properties of the parts at a one-to-one scale.
The MXW 2500 has a swivel-platen technology, for running multicomponent injection moulding using KraussMaffei’s SpinForm system. It also can run the MuCell process for further weight reduction.
